You’re invited to the first Denver Streets Congress meeting of 2019!

by Jessica Vargas on January 4, 2019

The Denver Streets Congress (DSC) is back for its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, January 9! Whether you’re a regular or first-time attendee, the Denver Streets Partnership (DSP) would like to welcome you to participate as we build and engage dialogue about how to support people-friendly streets in Denver. DSC meetings are open to the public, offering opportunities to hear from local leaders, decision-makers, and advocates about transportation-related topics, projects, and ideas.

This month, we will hear from Denver Public Works about what they’re doing to update the City’s construction detour policies for pedestrian and bicycle access. Earlier this year, the Mayor’s Pedestrian Advisory Committee (MPAC) identified the need for better construction detour policies as one of their top priorities. WalkDenver is now partnering with MPAC on a #DetoursForPeople campaign, with the support of the Denver Streets Partnership and Denver Public Works. You can still use our online mapping tool to highlight access and safety issues created by sidewalk and bike lane closures due to construction.

Next on the agenda, the DSP will be releasing our Vision Zero Action Plan Report Card. The City & County of Denver adopted their five-year Vision Zero Action Plan in 2017 in order to work toward their stated goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries by the year 2030. As the number of traffic deaths on Denver streets continues to rise, it is more important than ever that the City make changes that will enhance the safety of all street users. We went through Action Plan to review what actions the City committed to taking in 2018 toward implementing the plan. Then we scored them based on what steps were actually completed. Join us to find out how they did!

Then, WalkDenver Executive Director Jill Locantore will give us an overview of the new Vision Zero-based street design guidelines being proposed in New York City and how they could serve as a model for implementing Vision Zero in Denver. This will be followed by a community roundtable where attendees are invited to share updates and announcements with the entire group. Feel free to bring your lunch to enjoy during the meeting and don’t forget to RSVP at the link below. We hope to see you there!
