WalkDenver’s Petition is Successful!

by Jill Locantore on November 13, 2014

You spoke up in support of walkability, and City officials listened

Earlier this summer, WalkDenver launched a petition calling upon City officials to take two actions:

  1. Form a Pedestrian Advisory Committee whose role will be to advise city officials, city agencies, and the office of the Mayor on policies, procedures, and infrastructure improvements needed to make Denver a great city for walking.
  2. Establish Denver Moves Pedestrians, a parallel implementation plan to the bicycle-focused Denver Moves plan, so that the City has a clear path forward for improving the pedestrian environment in Denver.

More than 1,100 individuals signed the petition, and nearly 50 organizations provided letters of support.  Click here to see reasons people provided for signing the petition and see below for the full list of partner organizations.

Today we are thrilled to declare success! On November 11, the Denver City Council approved the Mayor’s 2015 Budget, which includes funding for Denver Moves Pedestrians, and the City will soon be soliciting applications for for the Pedestrian Advisory Committee. (Stay tuned for more information!)

WalkDenver is looking forward to working closely with the City on the development of Denver Moves Pedestrians, to ensure the plan addresses several key areas, including setting priorities and a timeline for implementation; establishing goals and performance measures; supporting a safe, healthy, comfortable, and attractive pedestrian experience; and promoting a culture of walking. You can help support WalkDenver’s ongoing advocacy efforts by becoming a founding member of Denver’s walking movement!

Thank you to the more than 40 partners that provided letters of support:
