WalkDenver has one internship opportunity for the summer of 2017. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about creating a great, walkable city, and who possesses the skills appropriate for the position described below. Applications are due March 31, 2017.

Built Environment Assessment Intern
15 hours per week, June – August 2017, $750 monthly stipend

The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is proficient in geospatial mapping, data analysis, and graphic design and is comfortable working with community members and volunteers. You will work closely with WalkDenver staff to support an assessment of the built environment in Denver’s Athmar Park neighborhood, and the development of an Active Living Plan for the neighborhood.

Specific tasks include recruiting and training volunteers to assist with data collection; developing and managing volunteer data collection assignments; soliciting input from community members through paper mapping exercises; using GIS and statistical analysis tools to summarize and visualize data from a variety of sources; developing compelling materials that communicate the results of the built environment assessment; and assisting with the incorporation of the assessment into the Active Living Plan.

  • Planning, design, and facilitation of volunteer-based neighborhood active transportation audits
  • How to summarize and visualize active transportation data in a compelling manner
  • Characteristics of the built environment that support walking and biking
  • Active transportation issues, challenges, and opportunities facing Denver neighborhoods

What we require

  • Background in community planning, geography, or a related field
  • Interest in walkability issues
  • Strong geospatial and data analysis skills
  • Strong graphic design skills
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS, QGIS, CartoDB, or similar mapping tools
  • Proficiency with Excel or similar graphing and statistical analysis tools
  • Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator or similar graphic design tools
  • Comfortable working with a variety of people
  • Experience with volunteer coordination and training a plus
  • Must have access to a computer
  • Must pass a background check
